And BABY makes four!

A beautiful little baby joined our family last week. We named her Lena, after Jack's great grandma, and my aunt.  She is a sweet, cuddly baby and we are so in LOVE with her.

Her adoption story is full of ups and downs (I'll save that for another post) but we are just thrilled that she is here with us now.

Leo loves his little sister, and has been such a big help. He is a great brother.

Lena is a fairly good sleeper, but we have still had some sleepless nights.  We know this period of sleep deprivation is short, so in the meantime, we are just enjoying the time with our precious little girl.  Look at that darling face, and all that dark hair! Could she be any cuter?

We flew home over the weekend, and are so grateful to be home after 3 long weeks. Jack went back to work yesterday, so I had my first day with two kids on my own.  I tried to run an errand (yikes!) but I forgot the stroller and left Lena's bottle sitting in the warmer in the kitchen. So, it didn't turn out that well. But the night before was one of very little sleep, so I blame that. But it all worked out in the end! I am learning some new skills, that is for sure.

Lena is such a sweet baby. We just adore her. We love her silky black hair, and wrinkly baby skin. She coos and gurgles and makes lots of cute little sounds. She loves to cuddle and look out the window. She also loves (or at least tolerates) the many hugs and kisses from her very excited big brother.

All in all, we are feeling so blessed.  We love our little Lena, and are so grateful to her lovely birthmother, and her act of love. It is wonderful to be a family of 4, and we know that a lot of FUN and ADVENTURES are to come...

Adoption Miracles

Adoption is a miracle. Seriously.  It really is an "Act of Love" and it's amazing that we have witnessed this miraculous process twice now.

Don't get me wrong- adoption is a crazy adventure of ups and downs, and it is not for the faint of heart!  But in the end, when you get that beautiful little baby in your arms... it is all worth it.

We first submitted our paperwork for our second adoption about 2 years ago. (to the same agency we used with Leo) But they aren't doing a lot of adoptions in our area at this time, so we weren't making any progress. We thought of going with another agency, but realized the cost would be about 20k more that with our other agency.

A few months ago I went to a "Time Out for Women" event with my dear friend Rebecca. It was a wonderful weekend, and we both felt spiritually uplifted. While there, God told me that we needed to pursue our next adoption- and quickly.  He calmed my fears about the money, and told me that we should just go for it.  Miracle #1.

A month later we felt prompted to sell our house. We got it ready in one week. It sold on the day we listed it...  For 20k over the asking price.   Miracle #2.

We didn't want to leave our neighborhood, so we found a house for rent. It is literally 2 HOUSES away from our old house. It was available exactly when we needed it. We moved in one month later. Miracle #3.

We hired a caseworker here in Virginia, and began the adoption paperwork.  (mountains and mountains of paperwork, background checks, financial statements, health forms, etc etc) What normally takes 2-4 months, we got done in 1 month.  Our home study was completed in November.  Miracle #4.

We picked a new agency, "Act of Love" that is based in Utah. We filled out all the paperwork for them (Yes, there was more!) and got approved in December. Miracle #5.

In January our agency told us about a couple of birthmother situations. We signed off on a couple of them. One of them was for J.  We had a few concerns about her situation, and didn't sign the form right away.  For two days I felt the prompting "Sign the form." "Sign the form."  I finally listened, and we signed the form. Miracle #6.

The next day our profile was shown to J. The case worker told us that she went through dozens and dozens of family profiles. She picked ours first- we were her number one choice!  She loved that we value education, that we travel a lot, and that we love the cultural diversity in our area. She told the case worker: “This is Leo’s little sister.” Wow. It was wonderful to hear that.
The agency called to tell us the good news on January 14th.   Miracle #7

A few days later I was praying and meditating about what the baby's name should be. We've liked Lucy and Lena for a very long time, and they are both names from our grandmothers... but I've been leaning towards Lena.  On Tuesday night, as I was meditating, the name Mary came to me. I tried to dismiss it because it's such a common name, and we prefer more unique ones.  But that is what I thought of - Mary.
The following night I asked again, if Lena was the right name. God told me to look up the meaning. The first website that came up...   It said that Lena is a form of Magdalena, as in Mary Magdalene.  "Oh- I love her!" I thought.   Then I read this paragraph...
Mary Magdalene, a character in the New Testament, was named thus because she was from Magdala. She was cleaned of evil spirits by Jesus and then remained with him during his ministry, witnessing the crucifixion and the resurrection." I was so moved by this. I cried silent tears, as I praised God for this answer to my prayer.  I then asked him about a middle name for Lena.
Five years ago I was visiting a gravesite where I noticed a woman’s middle name on the tombstone- it was “Love.”  I liked it so much, and I have been thinking about it all these years.  So I asked God- What about “Love” as a middle name for Lena?  Is it too cheesy? Will she grow up hating it?  And I heard clearly… “It’s not cheesy. It’s an affirmation.  LOVE will be the affirmation for her life.  She will overcome all things with Love.”
Lena Love. What a beautiful name, for our beautiful little girl.  Miracle #8.

We had an appointment to meet the birth family in Utah on January 31st... So we had about a week to get prepare  We got the baby room ready, dug out some baby clothes, and bought a few things. Then we flew to Utah. We met the birth family, and liked them immediately. They are so nice!  J was due a week later, so we decided to stay in Utah until then. We stayed with Jack's parents and Leo enjoyed the time with Nana and Papa. They spoiled him rotten, as usual.

We got a call from J's mom that they were taking her to the hospital on Saturday night. We then waited and waited and waited.  We didn't hear anything for 5 agonizing days. The hospital wouldn't tell us anything, and we weren't sure what was happening. We got more anxious as each day went by. We prayed and prayed and prayed- hoping for a miracle.  Finally on Wednesday, we learned that the baby had been delivered on Sunday, via C-section.  J was recovering in the hospital, and was keeping the baby with her during her 4-5 day recovery period. But she and the baby were healthy, and doing well. We were so relieved. Miracle #9.

The next day we got the call. We could pick up the baby from the hospital!  We drove there as fast as we could, and practically ran into the hospital!   They let us in to the nursery, and then brought her out.  She was the most beautiful little girl I had ever seen.  A sweet little pink face, surrounded by thick, dark hair.  She was so tiny and perfect- all bundled up in a little white blanket.  I reached out and picked her up.  Tears streamed down my face, and I just couldn't believe that she was finally here. Jack and I were so happy, and so grateful to finally have her in our arms. She is perfect! Miracle #10.

We spent a wonderful week together at Jack's parents house with our new baby. We all loved to cuddle her, and smother her with kisses. My parents came up from California, and she was smothered with even more love and kisses.

We had to wait a few days to get approval to go home.  (ICPC law says that both states have to approve the adoption paperwork before you are able to cross state lines with a new baby) The three day weekend added a few days to the process, but we got the call on Friday morning (the 21st) that we could go home!  That was a record only-4-business-days to get approval!  (Leo's approval took almost 4 weeks!)  We were thrilled!   Miracle #11.

We were so anxious to get home, after being gone for 3 weeks, that we looked for flights immediately. We found a direct flight for that evening! We got our stuff packed in an amazing TWO HOURS... 4 suitcases, 1 box, and 2 backpacks...  and made it to the airport in time to catch our flight. Five hours later we were home, happy, and sleeping in our own beds.  Heaven!    Miracle #12.

We had a lovely weekend at home together, as a family.  It was heavenly! Pure bliss. The weather was kind of warm, so we took a walk around the neighborhood, Leo played outside a little bit, but mainly we just snuggled with our baby.  She is so sweet. We love every minute with her!   Our friend Karin brought over our 3-weeks-of-mail. A few friends stopped by, and the Hansens brought us dinner on Sunday.  Their boys played with Leo, and we all played with the baby.  So grateful to share our joy with dear friends. They have been with us through every phase of this adoption journey. Friends are such a blessing.  Miracle #13.

My final miracle is this...  after several sleepless nights, Jack stayed up with Lena all night- while I slept on the guest bed downstairs.  I woke up at 5am this morning--  after a glorious 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep.  I feel like a new person!  That is miracle #14.   (Thanks Jack-- you are the best father and husband.  We love you!)

We thank God for all of the miracles in our lives. We feel so much gratitude and love for Lena's lovely birthmother. She has give us the most precious gift, and we will be forever grateful for her act of love. This adoption has been miraculous, every step of the way. We feel so blessed.

Christmas!

We had a wonderful Christmas at home this year. The Gallachers and Fields came over on Christmas Eve for our 5-course French Dinner. The kids played together while we ate, and then we started the games:  Puzzle races, Head Bowling, White Elephant Gift Exchange, "Christmas Tree" Decorating, and the Musical Unwrapping Game. It was such a fun night!

 Joseph and Leo.

 White Elephant Gift Exchange.
Mary and Evie decorated as Christmas Trees.
 Head Bowling.

The Fields and the twins!

Christmas morning was fun too. Leo got lots of Star Wars toys- Boba Fett, Jabba the Hutt, and the Speeder were his favorites. Also the Star Wars mask that he asked Santa for. He was a happy boy!

Merry Christmas everyone! Hope you enjoyed your day in PJs as much as we did.

Merry Christmas!

This year has been a wonderful year full of love, light, fun, friendship, learning, and miracles. We thank God for our family, our friends, our home, and all the things that He has blessed us with. Most of all, we thank Him for our Savior Jesus Christ.  May His light shine in us, and through us.

"Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace,
good will toward men."     -Luke 2:14

From our family to yours, we wish you a very Merry Christmas, and a joyous New Year!

Singing, Singing, All the Day...

If you know Jack, you know he LOVES the band Oingo Boingo. This 80's band has been Jack's favorite since he was young.  The band no longer performs, but their lead singer Danny Elfman is still creating music- mostly for movie soundtracks like Beetlejuice, Batman, Men in Black, Edward Scissorhands, Alice in Wonderland, Oz, Epic, The Nightmare Before Christmas, etc. And Jack loves all of it.

If you know Leo, you know he LOVES singing songs. He is always humming or singing some song. Of course, he usually combines a couple of his favorites into one awesome song...   One of my all time favorite combos is:  Follow the Prophet (a Primary song),  and the Star Wars theme song.
Seriously awesome.

Another favorite song is from The Nightmare Before Christmas. (one of Danny Elfman's movies)  Leo sings the song "Making Christmas, Making Christmas... me-so-fine."     (I think it's supposed to be "is so fun", but I like his version better)

Another favorite combo... Frosty the Snowman and  Jesus Wants Me for a Sunbeam.

Toys

You all know the joke about kids playing with the BOX more than the TOY that came in it?  We laugh because it's so true.  As Christmas approaches Jack and I have been contemplating the many gifts we have bought Leo over the last (almost) 4 years. What have been his favorite toys? What does he play with the most?

Our answers made us laugh.  And in this photo, you'll see why. These are Leo's favorite toys of all time...

It isn't the train table, the lego sets, the superheroes, or the tool bench.  It's the everyday items we have around the house. To be precise, it's an ear thermometer, mini stapler, label maker, a used ink cartridge (in yellow) tied to a rope, a steamer basket, a nightlight, a light timer, a kitchen meat thermometer, an apple corer/slicer, an ice scraper, and camera tri-pod.

I wouldn't consider any of these to be great toys, in the traditional sense.  (and we keep most of them hidden out of site because of sharp edges, risk of electrocution, choking hazard, etc.)  But Leo LOVES them. He loves to twist and turn the knobs, dials, and levers. He loves to push the buttons and pretend the label maker is a walkie-talkie, or a calculator. The tri-pod is often a submarine periscope, or a cannon. There are no limits to his imagination, or the wonderful ways he will use these "toys".    In fact, as we gathered these up to take a photo we have been reconsidering some of the Christmas gifts we bought for him.  Maybe we SHOULD just give him a box-- if it's full of gadgets.

Adoption Update

Well, we finally finished our Adoption paperwork and have been approved by the agency!  This very long process is done, which means... Now, we wait!

Once a birth mother picks us, and we are "matched", we will get that magical phone call...   we can't wait!
I guess you could say we're "expecting"....

Here is our little video, if you'd like to pass it along:

Jack's Birthday, Ford's Theatre

Happy Birthday Jack!  He took the day off work, and we went on a daytime date.  Breakfast at a diner in DC (it was kind of a dive), the best hot chocolate EVER from Le Pain Quotidien, and then a play at Ford's Theatre.

We saw A Christmas Carol- which was a really great production. The Theatre is small, but very lovely, and it was so interesting to see the booth where President Lincoln was shot, as well as the house across the street where he later died. They have a nice little museum there.

Little Drummer Boy

We went to the mall today for photos with Santa. It was a "snow day" so Jack didn't have to go into work. (The big storm that was expected only dumped an inch or two of snow, so it ended up being a great day to run errands) This was our 4th year with this same Santa.. and Leo charmed us with that darling smile of his. Cutest kid ever!

After the photos we walked around the mall, looked at toys, and ate sushi at this cool conveyor-belt restaurant.  Leo liked drumming with his chopsticks...

Tonight we acted out the Christmas story using Leo's Fisher Price Nativity Set. When it got to the part of "Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh, I went to get my bottles of essential oils. That's right- Frankincense and Myrrh- two amazing essential oils that are as precious today as they were back then.  I am so grateful for these gifts of the Earth, and how they empower me to take care of my family's health. So awesome!

Frosty the Snowman

Snow, lovely snow!   Karin and Rebecca came over today, and we built a snowman in the front yard.  We are loving the snow, and hope that it sticks around for Christmas....

Grandma and Grandpa's House

After our week at the beach we went up to Grandma and Grandpa's house with them  (they live about 3 hours away).  We decorated the house for Christmas, made salt-dough ornaments, and played with Grandpa.

We used to stand on my Dad's hands like this when we were kids...  I can't believe he can still do this! (not bad for an old guy, as he says)  Leo enjoyed it.

We flew home on December 5th, just in time for the Christmas party at Leo's preschool, and getting ready for Christmas, which is just 3 weeks away!

Thanksgiving at the Beach

We flew to California for our yearly pilgrimage to Carpinteria. Thanksgiving at the beach (and Camping) with all our extended family is the best!  The weather was perfect and we enjoyed many warm days playing in the sand and surf. Leo loved playing with cousin Bridger, and all the other cousins that were there too.

Us with my parents, my sister Jen, Chad and Bridger.

Leo and Bridger help Grandpa to build a sand castle and moat.

We counted about 60 of us for Thanksgiving dinner this year!  I made the stuffing and my famous "Orange Gravy"...  as usual. And we actually succeeded in getting everyone together for a photo!

I realized a few months ago that this annual trip to the beach really is our "Family Reunion" so I put together some fun activities for us to do together. We helped all the kids make Indian vests from paper sacks (just like the ones we made in Grade school), we played "head bowling", and made a pirate treasure hunt for the kids...  It was a lot of fun. We will definitely be doing it again next year.

Another highlight of the week- the spectacular sunsets!  They were incredible!

Leo rode a bike (with training wheels) for the first time this week. It was a little slow going at first, but after 10 minutes he was riding like a pro.  (I think a new bike will be in his future) He loved it.

Meditation Retreat

My friend Felice, who teaches Kundalini Meditation, came here from California to do a Meditation Retreat.
We rented a lovely cabin in the Shenandoah Valley for the weekend. There were only 4 of us (plus Felice) but it turned out perfectly.

Me and my dearest friend, Rebecca.  We are soul sisters.

Felice with Jessica and Rebecca.  Lisa was also there. Why don't I have a photo of her?

The setting could not have been more lovely.  The sky was blue, the trees were ablaze in red and orange, and the mountains were purple in the distance. We drank tea on the balcony, ate healthy salads, meditated, prayed, and felt closer to God. At night we sat in the hot tub under a clear sky, with a billion stars. It was spectacular.

Yummy salads, catered by me!

Our hot tub and stunning view.  It was an amazing weekend that I will never forget. We all returned home feeling relaxed, rejuvenated, and renewed.   This meditation is wonderful.  It's changed my life.

Halloween and Fall Fun

Leo's love of Star Wars continues.
A friend gave us this hand-me-down costume for Anakin Skywalker.  Not only was it a great Halloween costume for him, but he's had a lot of fun wearing it- almost daily.

The kids in Leo's preschool class all looked so cute in their costumes!
(Lots of super heroes, and princesses.... what a surprise)

We went "Trunk-or-Treating" at the church on Saturday, and had fun with some friends.  We also went to the "Dia de los Muertos" festival at the American Indian Museum. Leo decorated a skull, and we looked at all the colorful displays.

We also visited the Annandale Fall Festival, where Leo rode some rides, we ate corn dogs and popcorn... and then Leo disappeared for 15 minutes, which gave Mom and Dad a serious heart attack.  We finally found him, coming out of the dollar store, shoplifted items in hand.  (yikes)
